How does returning stuff to a store work?

Ok let's say you bought something on a credit card and you go to return it with the receipt but no credit card. Like i bought this expensive book with my mom's card and i am going to return it tomorrow i still have the receipt and everything but i don't have her credit card. Do you know if barnes and nobles will just add the money back to her card, give me cash back, or give me store credit? And can you return stuff without the card but with the receite?
