Why is UPS shipping so ridiculous?

I ordered a some books from barnes and noble in the past and I've noticed, on their tracking website, that the shipping goes through the whole country. This latest shipment started in Sparks, Nevada then shipped to Oakland then to Louisville, Kentucky and hasn't arrived yet. I live in Iowa. Why don't they make it more simple?
